“Carta di identità”: what is it and how to get one?
The carta di identità is an identity document issued by local town halls to all residents.
To get a carta di identità you need to be resident in that comune, therefore you need to be registered in the anagrafe of that comune.
You can apply for a carta di identità only in the comune you are resident in, not in a different comune.
The carta d’identità is not compulsory, however it is very handy to have one, as this is the most common way of identification used in Italy.
The carta di identità lasts 10 years and can be renewed in the comune you will be resident in at the time of renewal.
Any resident in Italy is entitled to get a carta di identità, irrespective of their nationality.
It is important to note that the carta d’identità proves your identity, it is not a permit of stay, has nothing to do with the codice fiscale or visa, and does not prove your right to live in Italy.
Italians registered with AIRE can get a carta di identita` from their local Consulate.
