Move to Italy FAQ 1
1. Do I need a codice fiscale to live in Italy? You need it for a number of things: for buying, renting, opening a bank account, buying a mobile sim card, etc., so if you are considering to move to Italy, the sooner you get it, the better it is.
2. How do I get a codice fiscale? You get it from your consulate or from any Agenzia delle Entrate office in Italy. We can obtain it for you for a small fee.
3. What is residency? You have residency in a town when you are registered in the anagrafe of that town.
4. Can I be eligible for the various Italian tax schemes if I’m not an EU citizen? Yes, you can, if there are bilateral agreements between Italy and your country.
5. Can I establish residency with a short-term rental contract? You can, however, comunes prefer long term rental contracts to register you in their anagrafe.
6. How long is a long-term contract? It’s usually 3 years with the option to renew for further 2 years (3+2), or 4 years with the option to renew for further 4 years (4+4). In both cases you can leave early giving appropriate notice.
7. Can I open an Italian bank account if I’m not resident? Technically you can, in practical terms not all banks offer accounts for non-resident, and the ones which do might be a bit fussy on requirements.
8. Citizenship vs residency. You can be a citizen and be resident anywhere in the world. You are resident when you live permanently in Italy, even without being a citizen.
